Portrait Light Techniques

Split Light Technique
Butterfly Lighting Technique
Loop Lighting Technique in Black & White
Rembrandt Lighting Technique

My favorite photo that I took was the Rembrandt lighting technique. The student, Luke, was listening to tips on how to get better lighting when I took the shot. This was my favorite because it was in the moment, rather than having the model get ready for the photo. This also captured Rembrandt perfectly and the lighting in the photo makes it interesting to look at.

the split lighting technique is definitely one that I would use in a photo. It would be interesting to have two different colors on both sides of the models face to convey their mixed emotions. I also feel like it is easy to come up with an idea using the split lighting technique.

Light, Frozen, and Blur Motion In Oratory Prep

Light painting, 1024 sec shutter-speed, f/13, aperture, ISO 100
Motion Blur, >1024 sec shutter-speed, f/13 aperture, ISO 100
Motion Freeze, 1/500 sec shutter-speed, f/14 aperture, ISO 1600

When shooting motion pictures, it is important to change the shutter speed as it determines if the picture looks frozen or blurry. For light painting pictures, it is extremely important to be in a dark area and have the right settings as it determines if the painting can be seen well.

Cretu Image – Joe Namath

A picture of an actor, the face being replaced by former Jets Quarterback Joe Namath

I hope the viewer has to take a second to realize that the picture was altered. I want the viewer to be surprised, the man in the picture is a celebrity. This makes a statement to culture today as modern people can relate to the culture back then. My advice to make a composite image is to relate to the celebrity to the art, it makes it more interesting rather than putting a polar opposite on the art.

Abstract Photography, Vibrance in Photography

vibrant, green water beads
Refraction, picture of an apple with a galaxy inside it
glass mixed with the colors blue and purple, showing two different emotions in the picture
Mixture, a drop of red mixing with oil and water

A.  The glass photo conveys an emotion that can be interpreted as sad or soothing. The mix of purple and blue makes the glass object have a feeling. The glass show two sides, conveying a sad yet soothing photo. The line between the two colors shows the split of emotions in the photo

B. The glass photo makes me think about a person feeling two different emotions. Maybe they are split on a decision, unsure if they should choose one or the other. The two colors could also interpret the end of a relationship, one soothed and relaxed while the other is sad and unsure. It is interesting and fun to interpret a photo showing only colors.

C. The line splitting the two colors really jumps at me. The two different colors on the glass jumps at me as well, conveying emotion in the photo. It is interesting how the line can represent a split decision or split emotions. The two colors are also interesting as it exemplifies two different colors with different feelings.

D. The photo soothes me but strikes me as a mixed emotion photo. The colors show a soothing yet sad feeling. The photo made me feel a certain way where I was both calm yet sad. The mixed emotions in the photo makes the viewer question the emotions being shown in the photo, making the photo more interesting to interpret.

E.  For advice on shooting abstract photography, try to make out of the box photos. For the water beads, I tried to make the photo not look like water beads in a jar, but rather using the beads to convey a different emotion and out of the box photo. Try to make a photo that you can enjoy looking at while conveying an emotion. This makes the photo more interesting and fun to look at.

Nolan’s Palatable Pictures

picture at school of a student holding a squash while sitting on top of the Oratory Ram Statue
A student in the cafeteria drinking Pepsi

I chose the squash because of it’s unique shape and texture. It’s orange color is also captivating and circularity. I chose the pepsi can because of it’s vibrant blue color.

The first photo was taken outside in the morning, giving the photo enough light where the light isn’t overtaking the main subject of the picture (the squash). It was somewhat sunny but mostly cloudy, so the picture was dark but was there was still light. The second photo was taken in the school cafeteria with medium lighting from the cafeteria lights, adding more vibrance to the food and the student’s hoodie.

I took a photo focusing on the most vibrant objects in the photo and zoomed in (focus) to put the vibrant object in the photo. I also mainly focused on selecting  different foods with different types of matter and color.  I cropped the photo as well to not distract the background from the main color object

Both of these images are everyday things in every day life. The significance of the photo is how food brings color into our lives. The black and white changes once the person touches food or eat/drinks it.

I enhanced the depth of field to focus on the main object. I zoomed in so that nothing could distract from the food. I changed the exposure so that the light could match the photo.

Advice for students next year is that they should take photos that they enjoy. it’s important to follow directions, but try to be creative. The objective of Digital Photography is to learn how to take photos and edit them, but to have as much fun as possible as well.

Elements and Imagery of Oratory Prep

A picture of a man made line, the roof of the Bain building
a picture of a line in nature, the lines in the flowers and the smaller plants in the picture
a picture of the brightness of the sun being shaped into a geometric shape.
a picture of a bush with organic yellow leaves combining with the shade and sunlight
a picture of a student about to kick a soccer ball in black and white
a picture of a student near a brick wall that seems like he is trapped (focus, 3D).
A picture of the American flag, blurring out the sky and focusing on the flag
a picture of a close up of a brick wall and the sky. They align perfectly
a picture of a set of pink flowers, focusing on the color pink
a picture of a brick wall that shows texture and lines.

My strengths are my creativity and how I use my lens to focus in and out before taking a picture. My weakness is identifying when to take a picture, like seeing a bee on a flower but not recognizing the possible picture that could be taken.  I will improve my photoshop work since all of this photos were changed in brightness, contrast, or saturation. I intended to show the elements rather than making the viewer guess the element shown. I would like to explore taking photos of organic elements since there are different kinds of flowers and different colors and sizes, it interests me. I want to experiment using color and other tools that I haven’t used before in Photoshop, I feel that I can take good pictures, but I want to get better at editing and perfecting my images.

Morning at Oratory Prep

Picture of a Oratory student next to the ram statue near the DaGaeta building
Picture of a Oratory student waking up from a quick nap outside of the DaGaeta building
Picture of birds sitting together on a fence

I enjoyed how I was able to take pictures of different objects and subjects in different areas with different colors, shades, etc. I also enjoyed taking pictures of the area around Oratory as there are many trees and buildings nearby. Overall, it was extremely fun to do, especially since I got to work with other students.

The biggest challenge that I faced was taking pictures of things on the scavenger hunt that were difficult to find outside. For example, it was hard to find someone with a shadow because it was extremely cloudy. Another example was when I had to take a picture of something smaller than a mouse because there weren’t any animals or any items that were smaller (eventually I found a woodchip and a shadow)

Take more pictures with more emotion and meaning. These pictures were more of a subject having to be taken than seeing something in the moment. It was extremely enjoyable, but I wish I could’ve done that.
